Brian Ahern wraps up the Orwell Xmas race.

The annual Xmas Hamper race was run off in very cold but clear conditions at Brittas. 38 brave souls signed on at the Blue Gardenia and the race was neutralised out to Manor Kilbride for the race proper where it was split into 4 handicapped groups. Those who were costumed were very inspirational-Santa Hammond master of ceremonies, Christmas Wreath Tansey, AKA Angel and Elf Aideen as well as a few others.
The pace was high from the start and the limit group was caught towards the
end of the first lap of the small lake circuit just before the drag heading for
Sorrell View towards Kilbride. The second
group was caught just into the 3rd lap by the combined forces of the semi scratch and scratch group and the pace jumped up another couple of notches. Heading for the bridge at
Blessington
there
were a few attacks which were all neutralised.
Later in the lap Dylan
Rafter did a
Bjarne Riis imitation coming back to eye ball the
competition before launching
himself
off the front. Up the drag one last time the main
bunch was splintered due to the
high pace and down the descent to the finish where
there was a furious
surge by
the usual contenders (and pretenders). On the line the
honours were taken by
Brian Ahern with Stephen McNally 2nd and Colm Ahern, taking
3rd spot ensuring that the
Ahern family prize fund was well topped up.
A big thanks to Aidan, all the marshals, supporters and those who donated to the
raffle
and spot prizes for a great morning's racing.
The heart rate monitors haven't worked that hard for quite some time.
Happy Christmas everyone and see you on the road in the New Year.
