See below for an announcement from Club President Denis Gleeson regarding the club's sponsorship by Scott Cycles.

It is with great pleasure that I can announce our Club will have a new principle sponsor commencing in 2016. The sponsorship deal agreed with Mel Sutcliffe and Scott cycles is for three years (2016 – 2018).

Mel himself is well known in Irish cycling circles and during his racing career represented Ireland on several occasions. He won the Junior Tour stage from Kanturk to Clonakilty in 1990 and finished fourth overall that year. Before he hung up his wheels, he started out in the bicycle business and founded the Eurotrek Group, of which he is currently chief executive. Mel is also an active member of Orwell and recently competed in the final club league race of the year.

This deal now in place will allow Orwell Wheelers to focus and implement its vision for the future. The principle aim in this vision is to encourage and retain membership of youths and juniors. While this concept is currently in place it needs to be taken to another level. We will now establish a Junior Academy. However, ensuring the success of the plan will need some more help and support from the members to achieve these goals.

Also as part of the vision, will be a structure to allow all members achieve or improve on their goals (this includes both racing and leisure) currently under review. The club itself is missing a home base. A clubhouse, modest in the initial years, will give a sense of identity to the members. The club car, supplied by Mel since 2014, has been confirmed to continue under the same conditions as part of this deal. The car has proved a success across the board and more use of the car should be considered.
