Unfortunately we have to postpone Blazing Saddles for the moment as it would have been outside Government and Cycling Ireland guidelines
Our thanks to the Orwell Covid committee for their help and guidance on this and please see their letter below
Hopefully we can soon get this iniative going again and we are all so looking forward to when we can get back to group and Club cycling
Meantime stay well safe and fit and follow the recent guidelines posted by the Covid Committee
As soon as we hear about restrictions being lifted or changed we will be in touch
And keep those saddles warm !

Hi Bryan

Thanks for sending through the information in relation to the proposed 'Blazing Saddles' get back to cycling initiative. The Covid Committee has debated it over the last 24 hours and come to a unanimous position. We have gone through the detail of all the published information from gov.ie and Cycling Ireland in reaching our conclusion.

Unfortunately, we believe that the proposed initiative is outside the revised Level 5 Government and Cycling Ireland guidelines.

There are a number of points that are important to note.

We appreciate that when the initial idea was formulated it was pre the government announcement which turned out to be more restrictive than anticipated. The announcement clearly states that all organised events are outside guidelines so should not take place for the foreseeable future.

The first return to organised outdoor cycling activity is for underage categories from the 26th of April so no organised outdoor club activity for any category is allowed before then.

Guidelines support personal exercise only during April. As the proposed initiative has been communicated through the club forum and WhatsApp groups it would be viewed by an independent person as an organised club activity.

We all believe this is a really good and worthwhile proposal that aims to get members cycling again which is at the very core of what the club stands for however, it needs to be put on hold for a number of weeks.

The most important message is that this is a timing issue and hopefully we will know later this month if it can go ahead safely in May.

I trust this is ok and thanks again for checking before any communication issued to members.
Eamonn

Blazing saddles is a fun motivational cycling challenge to get us out and back on our bikes. tinyurl.com/Orwell-Blazing-Saddles
You will become part of a virtual team of 6 and your weekly individual cycling distance will be added up with your team members.
The challenge will start on the June 5th
You organize your own cycle to suit yourself or as a team
The challenge is based on an honour system. No need for Strava/Ridewithgps recordings
Duration - Start June 5th - Finish July 2nd (4 weeks)
Weekly team distance challenge for the Team
Weekly team distance challenge
o Week 1: June 5th - 11th : Team distance challenge 540KM
o Week 2: June 12th - 18th : Team distance challenge 660KM
o Week 3: June 19th - 25th : Team distance challenge 720KM
o Week 4: June 26th - July 2nd : Team distance challenge 840KM

So for example ideally in week 1 each person will cycle 90k, however if one member can only cycle 30k other team members can make up the difference.
