The Ras Tailteann is Ireland's premier cycling event for men and takes place in May. Ras na mBan, the premier cycling event in Ireland for women takes place each September. Scott-Orwell Wheelers has a strong history of representation in these events and once again we hope to field teams in both the men's and women's versions in 2018.

In order to compete cyclists give up a huge amount of their time to train and then a full week for the race itself. It is a huge commitment and we salute them for it.

The annual table quiz is an extremely important event in helping to get our cyclists to the start line. Funds raised along with sponsorship and substantial contributions by the riders themselves helps to cover accommodation, transport, race entries etc...

Thanks to all who turned out last night, the amount raised was over €2,000 for the Rás and Rás na mBán teams. There were 20 teams competing - we hope everyone enjoyed themselves, and well done to all the prize winners!

The winners of the "cycling knowledge" competition was Team Irish Corner with Stephen, Ronan, Cliona and Emily.

The overall winners were Team Viva Espana. It was a close fought competition right to the last round when Viva Espana broke clear and romped home. Well done to Manual, Kilian, Paulo, Tom and Sergio.

If you missed out last night and would still like to contribute to the Ras fundraising we are running a separate online raffle. The prize is a 2 night stay in Mt Wolseley Hotel & Spa in Carlow with a 4 course dinner included.

To be in with a chance to win all you have to do is donate to the club PayPal account. You can do this using the email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. when you log onto PayPal. All those who donate, along with those who bought the blue raffle tickets will be entered. The winner will be announced on the day the Ras team is announced.

Big thanks to all involved last night, Club President Paul Tansey for opening proceedings, to MC and Quizmaster Declan Quigley, helpers Helen, Lucy and Brian, raffle-ticket sellers Neal, Eoin, Bernard, Ronan and Manuel, and those behind the scenes Ken and Stephen. It was a great team effort!

To all those who sponsored prizes we would also like to say a huge thank you, we could have a quiz without prizes:)

And finally thanks to the Goat Grill for hosting the event. It was my first time there and it was the ideal venue!
