When last we checked in with the Youths they had just hosted the One Day event at Corkagh Park and were looking forward to a summer of cycling. Read on to see what they got up to over the summer.

Track

The boys and girls were regularly out on the track at Sundrive, taking part in the Summer and Autumn leagues as well as the training sessions on Saturdays. The Track is an excellent training ground for bike handling - having no brakes tends to concentrate the mind - and for developing power. At the National Youth championships, we had two National Champions in three of the disciplines, Caoimhe and Lara together with a second place for Andrew.  A number of the group represented Leinster in the Youth Interprovincials up in Orangefield where home track advantage helped Ulster to a commanding win.

Time Trialling

Quite a few took part in the Club League Pine Forest TT and the Hammond Memorial in Roundwood. Bobbi, Lara, Caoimhe, Annie and Ronan took part in the National TT Championships, where Lara took another title, Caoimhe was 2nd and Annie 3rd.

XC – Cross Country

Some of our youngest members took to XC with remarkable gusto. Kevin is the National U8 champ, as is Caoimhe in the U14’s. Anna won a number of events and Annie and Darragh were regularly on the podium during the summer long series.

Sportifs

As a group we took part in three events over the summer, the Joe Daly Memorial Spin to Enniskerry, the 50k Tour of Meath and the 200k (for some) of the Willow Wheelers 100 Mile cycle.

Rás

We rode in to Dublin Castle to send the club's elite men’s racers on their way in the Rás. Much ogling of the bikes on display went on and birthday wish lists were rapidly updated.

Monday Night Racing

Every Monday over the summer we hosted open racing for youths at Corkagh Park. This event gives youths a regular dose of racing and is great practise for the open racers as well as being great fun in itself, with 3 events every each evening. The turnout among the under 10’s was huge. For the first six weeks there was a league and our own Ruairi was top boy overall while Aine won the girls title  - and more importantly , the Reilly family title . Club legend Noel O’Neill did the presentation honours.

Road Races

We have a good core group of racers who regularly participate in open races around Leinster and the country. In the U12’s Killian, Katie, Aine, Luca and Lorcan have all taken part this summer. In the U14’s, Andrew, Ronan, Dylan, Annie, Ruairi and Caoimhe were regular features and won a few quid and medals along the way. In the U16’s Peter, Tadhg and Lara wore the colours.

As the season progressed their development was plain to see and culminated in National Titles for Katie, Caoimhe and Lara. There was gold in the Leinsters for Katie, with Aine and Annie picking up silver.

MTB

David was a regular in the MTB series over the summer - alas no photos exist to prove it.

Weekends Away

There were expeditions to Kanturk, Letterkenny and Carlow for three days of racing. Earlier you may recall we were up in Drogheda for a couple of days. These events are wonderful opportunities for the youths to get to know each better, to share tips and to measure themselves against the best in Ireland and beyond. We’re delighted to say they have been great ambassadors for the club.

European Youth Olympics

Lara represented Ireland at the European youth Olympics where she picked up Irelands first medal of the event winning silver in the TT.

Juniors

A small but dedicated group of juniors raced at a very high level over the summer, with Seán having a stunning season which included some aggressive racing in the Youth Tour, placings at Mondello and wrapping up with a fifth place yesterday in the Laragh classic.

Sunday Spins

Most weekends over the summer we had spins from Joe Dalys regularly taking us up in to the Wicklow Hills or out to Enniskerry.

We have fifty-eight youths and juniors on our books, and we saw most of them at at least one of the events shown above. Our youth group policy is to encourage boys and girls of all ages out on to the bike and as you can see above there really is something for everyone.

We have two more events lined up, a team challenge event - open to all our youths - with Navan RC, Lakeside Wheelers and Inspiration CC joining us at Corkagh Park on Saturday, September 16th, followed by the Club Track Championships at Sundrive on September 17th before we take a break until October 15th when the winter season starts.
