The days are getting longer and Easter is just around the corner. Since last September our youths have been working on their cycling skills from their winter base at Corkagh Park. As Spring turns to Summer we preview what they will be getting up to this season.

Weekly Spins

The springboard for everything is the weekly road spin for ages 10 and up . Most Sundays during the summer we leave from Joe Dalys at 10:00 on Sunday mornings. These spins are suitable for any youth who we know is comfortable riding safely in a group on open roads in traffic. In the picture below some of the older lads are up in Ballinascorny getting ready to descend down to Kilbride army range. Peter was trying to crack some sort of visual joke at the time.

Weekly Races

From April 30th there will be racing every Monday Night @ Corkagh until it’s time to go back to school.  This is open to girls and boys of all ages from 6 to16 . Each age group  gets to take part in 3 events each evening. Some serious races, some novelty races and an emphasis on fun. This is the perfect introduction to racing in a safe environment.

Entry fee is only €2 per night. Sign on starts at 6.30 with first race off at 7.

Anna shows us her MTB trophy one Monday night last year.

Multi-Day Events

We have three trips planned this summer

In April , a girls team and a boys team are heading off to Perth for the Youth Tour of Scotland https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/youthtourofscotland . This is the first time in a few years that the club will have sent cyclists over and is the first time any Irish club has sent two teams.

They will no sooner have got back than everyone will be heading to Drogheda for the 2 day Ras Na Nog. http://droghedawheelers.ie/wp/?page_id=325

This is what our crew made of it last year

Then in early August its off to gods own country , Donegal for the three day Errigal International Youth Tour http://errigalcyclingclub.com/ . Staying in local hostels , eating together and cycling as  a team the group have plenty of time to bond and to race hard.

Sportives

We will be supporting the Joe Daly Memorial spin from Simpsons Hospital in Dundrum to Enniskerry and back on June 24th .

Then the following week we are planning on heading to the Leinster Loop http://www.leinsterloop.com/ on the weekend of June 30th and July 1st – with the shorter distances for the younger age groups on the Saturday and the longer ones on Sunday .

Open Races – hosted by Orwell

On May 12th we host an Open race day at Corkagh Park. This is a one day, 3 stage, event with riders coming from all over the country for it.

In conjunction with the adult section we participate in the Stephen Roche GP around the Meadowmount  housing estate . This year it will be on Wednesday June 20th.

Open Races

Most weekends there are Open Races being run somewhere around the province and we encourage our youths to take part in these. They are run by various clubs and are open to girls and boys in U16 , U14 and U12 age Groups.

Track training and Racing

During the winter we offered the youths the chance to get accredited at Sundrive Track so that they could train (Saturdays) or race (Wednesdays) on the track over the summer. See www.trackcycling.ie for more info on these.

Plenty of activity then for youths of all ages and abilities. There is a full schedule posted up on the website (Excel document  Youth Summer Calendar)
